If you were the 1980s or 90s kid, you probably spent some time reading, watching, or playing with four pizza-crazed adolescent reptilian martial arts experts with irregular DNA. Any ninja turtles fan who will read this will go back to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles days and have shivers going down the spine.
I was so obsessed with them that I only wanted to have Pizzas and eventually ended up with a big gut. Kids use to carry mutant ninja backpacks full of TNMT goodies inside. There were giveaways of their merchandise, and fast food chains had Ninja specials, especially Pizza joints.
Blue, red, orange, and purple forehead bands were a common sight as fans wore them to represent their favorite Half-shell heros.
So how did it all start?
Struggling artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were living in Northampton, Massachusetts, when they came up with the Turtles in November 1983. As a joke, Eastman drew a turtle standing on its hind legs, wearing a mask, with nunchucks strapped to its arms. Eastman wrote “Ninja Turtle” at the top of the page. Laird laughed and then drew a more refined version of the turtle. Not to be outdone, Eastman drew four turtles, each armed with a ninja-style weapon. Laird outlined the group shot in ink and added “Teenage Mutant” to the “Ninja Turtles” title.
As Eastman and Laird began fleshing out the Turtles to create a comic book, they had to give the Turtles names. At first, they tried Japanese names, but it just wasn't working. So they tried great Renaissance artists instead – Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo.
In May 2012, that original drawing of the Turtles sold at auction for $71,700.
The four heroes :
Leonardo,
The eldest, leader, and blue-banded, uses twin katanas. However, since little historical research was put into the cartoon, Leonardo's weapons are technically twin ninja kin.
Raphael,
Raphael,
The second eldest, hothead, and red-banded, uses twin said. These are not words, but daggers.
Donatello,
The second youngest, brainiac, and purple-banded, uses a bo staff. This non-offensive weapon reflects his pacifistic personality.
Michelangelo,
The youngest, joker, and orange-banded, uses two nunchakus.
The master :
Splinter,
The master :
Splinter,
Splinter was the pet rat of a ninja named Hamato Yoshi in Japan. Intelligent for his species, Splinter was able to learn his master's art by mimicking his movements while he practiced. Yoshi became embroiled in a dispute with a fellow ninja by the name of Oroku Nagi and was eventually murdered by Nagi's brother Oroku Saki.
Without a home, Splinter was forced to run away and live in New York City's sewers. Due to a traffic accident, four baby turtles and a canister of radioactive ooze were sent down into the sewer, where they mutated both Splinter and the turtles. Splinter named the four turtles Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo
He trained them in the arts of ninjutsu, while still raising them as his own sons.
