Django Unchained is a 2012 American western film written and
directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz,
Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film was
released on December 25, 2012, in North America. The film received very positive
reviews from critics (despite controversy over its strong use of the word
"nigger") and was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best
Picture. Christoph Waltz received several accolades for his performance and
won the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and his second Academy Award for Best
Supporting Actor.
This film was appreciated by people from all walks of life, and especially by western movie lovers. It was indeed a refresher and took us back to
the era of western movies. Only a cowboy movie buff will understand what I’m talking
about when I speak about classics such as Bridge over the river kwai, For a few dollars
more, Man of the west, The good the bad the ugly, The professionals, Once upon
a time in the west, and the list ever end.
The film plot is set in the antebellum era of the Deep South
and Old West, the film follows a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) who treks across the
United States with a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) on a mission to rescue his
wife (Keri Washington) from a cruel plantation owner (DiCaprio). Davis said the
idea of the costume came partly from Rhett Butler, and that Don Johnson's signature
Miami Vice look inspired the cream-colored linen suit in the film. King Schultz's
faux chinchilla coat was inspired by Telly Savalas in Kojak. Davis also
revealed that many of her costume ideas did not make the final cut of the film,
leaving some unexplained characters such as Zoë Bell's tracker, who was
intended to drop her bandana to reveal an absent jaw. And here is the rest of it.
The Cowboy costume displayed in the entire movie was made to detail with perfection. It’s not always easy to pull off western outfits with
such ease. Every costume worn by the actors in the movie personifies class and
character. My favorite is the bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz).
After going back and forth watching this movie, I got inspired and thought of writing a blog on a few western outfits worn by some of the
characters in the movie.
The Bounty
Hunter
This costume is somewhat like what Christoph Waltz had worn
in one of the scenes. Starting from the typical black western hat worn by the model in the image. What I liked the most is the pin-striped vest over a
satin silver shirt. A leather belt with
two classic stainless steel frame revolvers at the sides. Straight-fit worn-out
jeans and cowboy boots, and the
iconic black overcoat complete the western look. This is a perfect example
of a bounty hunter who is street smart and likes to dress in darker shades.
The cruel
plantation owner
Leonardo DiCaprio is
Calvin Candie
in the movie, alternately charming but brutal owner of Candyland,
a plantation where slaves
are forced to fight to the death in boxing matches called "Mandingo fights.
In most of the movie Calvin has worn a brown overcoat similar
to the model in this image.
It’s a brown overcoat with a lighter brown vest inside. Typical
cowboy style. A red bandana over a blue denim shirt again very cowboy. An oval
steel buckle with a bull with long horns made on it. The brown leather belt has
bullet slots. Almost ditto to Calvin’s
choice of denim, the model is wearing distressed blue denim with brown boots.
This entire outfit describes Leonardo DiCaprio’s role and personality in the film.
